Sustainability Officer.
Dr Tewfik studied BSc Biology at University of Firat in Elazig, Turkey, Dr Tewfik immigrated to London, UK in October 1992. During her study of the MSc in Applied Microbiology at University of Westminster, she joined St Marys Hospital, London in August 1994 as an intern at the Cytology and
Cytogenetics Departments. In October 1995 she took a post in
Cytology Department, to train as a
Biomedical Scientist, becoming
State Registered Biomedical
Scientist in March 1998. In October
1998, Dr Tewfik returned to academia as PhD researcher at University of Westminster working on bioactive compounds extracted from
Anacyclus pyrethrum. She served as
a Research Assistant supporting the operations of the greenhouse, care
for a variety of plants (horticulture)
and the cell culture laboratory, care
for variety of marine phytoplanktons.
In January 2000, she was appointed
as Research Fellow to the newly
formed research group for Quality
Control and Assurance of Herbal
Products. The research group
included School of Bioscience and
School of Integrated Health
(University of Westminster) and
Neal’s Yard Remedies, UK. Sundus
was instrumental in designing and
implementing the project from
cultivation of plants at Highgrove,
Duchy Home Farm, to preparing
herbal remedies at The Centre for
Community Care and Primary
Health Clinic, to laboratory profiling
and testing of plant extracts at
Biosciences Laboratories. Built on
these years of experiences, Sundus
was appointed as industrial
consultancies for various
enterprises:
2007- 2010 at Neal’s Yard Remedies
working on UV Protective Plant extracts
April - July 2012 at University of
Westminster, analysing macro and
micronutrients profiles of natural
products as ingredients to formulate
tailored functional recipe (TFR)
model meals
May – Aug 2008 at Qatar General
Electricity and Water Corp, Qatar,
Determination of Volatile Organic
Compounds in sampled Drinking
Water.

2000-2018 Sundus has taught at
various higher/further education
institutions; e.g. University of
Westminster, City of Westminster
College, London Metropolitan
University. She changed the course of teaching in sciences by
encouraging her students to
conduct experiments which have
industrial applications, to become
active participants in their own
learning and share their ‘know-how’
with their peers and ‘show-how’
within their communities.
In 2004 Sundus founded her first
company ‘Sundus Connect UK’ and
Charitable Foundation ‘Sundus Hope
UK’. Sundus has been an innovator
as well as entrepreneur for over 20
years, developing new ways to
integrate ancient remedies into
standard pharmacological
therapies for the management of
chronic diseases. The research
techniques she employ span over
various laboratory scrutiny starts
from authentication of botanicals;
biochemical evaluation,
antimicrobial testing,
isolation/identification of
“biologically active” components
(in-vitro/in-vivo tissue systems),
quality control, product formulations
and randomised clinical studies.
Sundus is married and honorary mum of 20 (and counting) very special young people.
